Lisa Eichlin’s book The Bravest Boy I Ever Knew is a heart-warming and uplifting story they every child should hear.  It is a story about friendship that is written in a language that a younger audience can understand and an older audience can learn from.  Michael the main character in the story tells you all about his best friend that is just like each one of us; he loves sports, he loves to play with his friends, he puts together puzzles, and he loves to fish.  Not only is he Michael’s best friend, he happens to be the bravest boy Michael has ever known. You will find out that Michael’s best friend has a disability. Still, Michael never focuses on the disability and what his brave friend cannot do but instead on all the wonderful things his friend does.  The illustrations are bright and cheery.  The vibrant pictures make the text come alive.

This story is a wonderful way to start a discussion about differences and how we all are different.  Yet, we all can be friends.  Also the book excellently highlights how brave children with disabilities really are and how we all should look up to them and learn from the challenges they face.  Some of the many sentences in the story that stress how brave the disabled can be include; “The bravest boy I ever knew never gives up; every day is a new day.” And “He never worries about what other people think when they look at him.  He’s not like any other friend I have ever had.”

My kindergartener and third grader both loved this book and it brought up a great discussion about some of the bravest kids my kiddos come in contact with in school and around town.  It really made my kids think. I also shared it with my Sunday School class of third graders.  They loved the book and it brought on a great discussion about how God makes us all different and how we all truly are special gifts from God. I highly recommend that this book become a favorite read-aloud in your classroom.  It’s an excellent and effective way to start a discussion about differences.  Lisa Eichlin’s book is a must read for all ages.
