Chinese New Year
(Feb. 5, 2000):
Ages 4^-8. In a
book that is itself a celebration, Demi explains the rituals and
ideas behind the Chinese New Year festival. The last 15 days of
the old year are spent cleaning and preparing ("Wash your
hair and get a new haircut. Pay the debts that you owe and
collect what is owed to you!"). On the eve of the new moon,
a special feast is prepared. Each food has meaning: pork, for
example, brings wealth.
This book is
one of my favorite books for Chinese New Year celebration. The
authors successfully capture the lively and warm atmosphere of
New Year celebrating among Chinese. Through the realistic
photograph as well as the text, the authors show readers the
custom of the Chinese New Year, such as offering food and incense
at the altar and wearing new clothes in New Year.

CHRISTMAS IN
AUSTRALIA:
Wombat
Divine by Mem Fox
Humble,
pudgy wombat--another endearing creation from award-winning
Australian author Mem Fox--loves Christmas carols, candles, and
pudding. But most of all he loves the Nativity Play. So imagine
his glee when he is finally old enough to participate in his
community's annual Christmas pageant! Alas, his hopes are dashed
when he arrives at the auditions and discovers he's too heavy for
the role of the Archangel Gabriel (the wire nearly snaps as the
animals try to hoist Wombat airborne), too big...

Ages
4^-8. Kimmel takes some playful Hanukkah traditions and combines
them with the old village trickster story, "The Tablecloth,
the Donkey, and the Stick." When Jacob drops his dreidel
down the well, the goblin who lives under the water gives the boy
a magic dreidel that spins out delicious latkes (potato pancakes)
with sour cream and applesauce.
