Update - January 23, 2003

Various Ideas

You can purchase notepads that are bear shapped (local teacher store). They come in
two size. Buy one of each size. Program the large bears with a math problem and the small
bears with an answer. Laminate and place each set in a baggie. The student can now match the
bears.

Have each student bring in a Teddy Bear from home. Graph the bears by size, color, which have clothes on and
which do not...

Place Teddy Crackers in a large jar. Have the students estimate how many are in the jar. COunt the bears to see which student
had the best estimate.

Discuss the difference between real bears and make-believe/Teddy Bears. Using a Venn Diagram for this activity would be a goof
idea!

Cut out bears of different colors. Place in pocket chart for patterning activities.

  Bear Snores On

A wonderful children's book, funny and fun to read aloud. This is a beautiful story about
forest animals gathering in a bear's cave while he sleeps. This story emphasizes the beauty of friendship.
The animals help eachother out, with fires and food, everyone making room for the next.
Even when the BIG bear wakes up, growling and fussing, the fun doesn't stop
& more room is made for them all to play. The wording is cleverly rhymed and
the story will leave you and your students smiling!

We're Going on a Bear Hunt (Classic Board Books)

A simple story of a family going on a bear hunt, going through grass, winter storm, forrest, cave, finding the bear and then leaving
AS FAST AS POSSIBLE! The text of the story is
lively and fun to read. The themes are
repetitive and easy for students to anticipate.
The rhythmic chant gets the students involved in the story.

My Favorite Bear Poems and Fingerplay

Five Little Bears: Counting up
One little bear
Wondering what to do
Along came another
Then there were two!
Two little bears
Climbing up a tree
Along came another
Then there were three!
Three little bears
Ate an apple core
Along came another
Then there were four!
Four little honey bears
Found honey in a hive
Along came another
Then there were five!

Here is a cave.
Bend fingers on one hand)
Inside is a bear.
(Put thumb inside fingers.)

Now he comes out
To get some fresh air.
(Pop out thumb.)

He stays out all summer
In sunshine and heat.
He hunts in the forest
For berries to eat.
(Move thumb in a circle.)

When snow sarts to fall.
He hurries inside
His warm little cave
And there he will hide.
(Put thumb inside fingers.)

Snow covers the cave
Like a fluffy white rug.
Inside the bear sleeps
All cozy and snug.
(Place one hand over the other.)

Bears Are Sleeping
(tune:  Brother John)

Bears are sleeping,
Bears are sleeping,
In their lairs.
In their lairs.
Soon it will be springtime,
Soon it will be spring time,
Wake up, bears!
Wake up, bears!

Some Great Ideas To Use With a Corduroy Book

Social Studies

Draw a map as a class of where you would go to find Corduroy in the department store and discuss how you would do it.

Math

Corduroy has lost a button. In the Frog and Toad stories, Toad also loses a  button. These stories are perfect lead ins for button math.

Buy an assortment of buttons and let the students sort the buttons by color, shape, size, and number of holes. Also use the buttons to do math addition and subtraction problems

Count the number of buttons you are wearing after reading the story.

Think About it Questions??

Pretend you are talking with Corduroy about his new home.
       What questions would you ask?
What do you think his answers would be?

Would you spend your money to buy an imperfect toy?

Fun at Home

The teacher has a stuffed Corduroy bear who spends the night with each  student. Students and parents write a Corduroy report detailing how they were a  friend to Corduroy.

Corduroy Color Center
Use in pocket chart or make many and place in baggies for students to use at their seats

Find a picture of Corduroy or a picture of a bear and add overalls. Make eight copies of the bears and color each overall a different color. Now on index cards write color words.

The student matches the color word to the bear with the given colored overalls.

Write about it!

Corduroy found a friend named Lisa. What does friendship mean to your students? Have each child write about friendship. This would make a great class book!
